Construction in Italy: Digital Transformation with BIM and ICMQ

Building Information Modeling (BIM) represents a revolution in the approach to managing the lifecycle of construction projects. Unlike traditional methodologies that rely on exchanges of drawings and coordination meetings, BIM introduces the use of models known as “digital twins.” These models virtually represent the entire construction, going beyond mere geometric representation to include detailed information about costs, execution times, material characteristics, and more.

In a BIM context, professionals involved in a project no longer work on separate drawings, but collaborate on a common model. This shared information environment enables the identification of interferences and the resolution of problems during the design phase rather than on-site. Interaction can occur at various levels, from independent work on specific models to simultaneous work on a single shared model.

ICMQ Certification in the BIM Context

ICMQ, in collaboration with key industry stakeholders, has developed a certification scheme for the BIM Management System (SGBIM), accredited by Accredia. This scheme, in line with UNI/PdR 74:2019, establishes requirements to enhance the efficiency of the programming, design, production, operation, and eventual decommissioning processes. Parallel to ISO 9001:2015, the SGBIM certification requires evidence of BIM implementation, demonstrating specific resources, infrastructure, and processes. Id 11, a company part of the id group along with id BIM, achieved this certification in June 2023, providing clients with a guarantee about the high quality of services offered by the organization and its actual operation in accordance with BIM methodology and related standards. Exponential Growth of BIM in Italy

The Italian BIM market has experienced significant growth, driven by legislation and its mandatory inclusion in the new Code of Contracts. This momentum was further strengthened by the digitalization of the construction sector, supported by funds from the PNRR, resulting in a significant increase in tender bids and requests from major clients. BIM has established itself as a cornerstone for efficiency, interoperability, and sustainability in the sector, fueling the growing demand for competency certifications and SGBIM.

Competency Certification and SGBIM

The number of BIM experts certified according to UNI 11337-7 and Pdr/UNI 78 has risen to 2,063, and 82% of these certifications have been issued by ICMQ. This reflects the increasing demand for certified BIM skills and the trust companies place in the ICMQ certification process.

In conclusion, BIM is revolutionizing the construction industry by offering an integrated and digital approach to managing the lifecycle of constructions. ICMQ certification in the BIM Management System ensures high standards and demonstrates companies’ commitment to the correct implementation of BIM. With the continued growth of the sector in Italy, ICMQ certification becomes a key element in demonstrating competence and quality in the digital transformation of the construction world.
